There is a marvelous, historic building, Edificio de Mujeres, at 18th and Guerrero Streets in San Francisco's Mission District. Two sides of the building are covered with a beautiful mural that celebrates women and their contributions from all over the globe.
MaestraPeace was created in 1994 by artists Juana Alicia, Miranda Bergman, Edythe Boone, Susan Kelk Cervantes, Meera Desai, Yvonne Littleton and Irene Perez, and it is breathtaking.
The Edificio de Mujeres houses the offices of non-profit businesses, but there are postcards, T-shirts and other items for sale in the lobby.
You can read more about the building at Women's Building |
| | International fabric patterns are spotlighted in the murals. |
| | Food and nurturing are also themes. |
| | The bands of flowers on this portion of the mural are so pretty. |
| | A different kind of Madonna |
| | Audre Lorde, Georgia O'Keefe, and Rigoberta Menchu are some of the famous women featured in the murals, and icons Quan Yin, Yemeyah, and Coyoxauqui are also included. |
| | The face on this one was a little scary, but I like the way the girl appears to be standing in a doorway draped with a blanket. |
| | I liked the idea of an artist painting another artist at work. |
