The Malliouhana Hotel. | Overcast with a 100% chance of awesome. |
We stayed at the Malliouhana Hotel during the "off" season in July 2006. If by "off" they mean, no crowds, and deserted beaches, then I guess I prefer the "off" season to any other season there is. We stayed in an ocean view double room for about $300(USD). The room was spacious, about 780 square feet, and had a fantastic view and 5 star service.
This is a snapshot from our hotel room. |
| Diving into the pool at the Malliouhana. |
| | Not enough time. We didn't have enough time to do everything.
I spent a whole lot of time jumping off of these rocks into the diving pool at our hotel. The pool is open 24 hours (impossible in America due to safety regulations). Come to think of it, jumping off of jagged rocks into a pool probably wouldn't fly as safe in the states either. |
Deserted island. Don't believe the hype. Going in the "off" season is the best way to enjoy this place. (Unless you get hit by a hurricane...)
Here's a picture of Meads Bay. This was the best beach that we visited; which also happened to be walking distance to the Malliouhana Hotel.
See those beach chairs? See any people on the beach? Didn't think so. | | |
| The Ku Pool. No one else here but hotel staff. |
| | The Ku Hotel. I spent some time at Shaol Bay and Upper Shoal Bay. I had made some new friends that were staying at the Ku Hotel. The hotel looked very nice. With off season rooms starting at $160(USD) this place is seriously a bargain.
It wasn't crowded, and it is priced a hell of a lot cheaper than the Malliouhana.
Here's a candid picture of their pool. See? No stupid people! Yay! |
Meads Bay. The environment could not have been nicer. I guess people go in the "high" season so they don't have to worry about hurricanes. The water was usually very calm. The waves came in small swells which made it enjoyable to go exploring.
It did get a bit hot from 11:00am to about 2:00pm, but from 3:00pm till sunset it was great.
"Off" season prices are about 1/2 price compared to "High" season. | | | Meads Bay - Deep, blue water. |
|
| Shoal Bay - Rocky Shoals where fish can hide. |
| | Shoal Bay and Upper Shoal Bay. Shoal Bay kept coming up in searches as "the best beach". While I disagree, (Meads Bay is the best!), I still enjoyed it.
Shoal Bay is named that way because near the coast you can see rocky shoals where little fish can hide from mean predators. This makes it an ideal place to snorkle. (Though I did not test that theory.)
There was more going on at Shoal Bay than where we were staying. There was a bar and a resturant directly on the beach. There seemed to be more people walking about and playing in the water than the other places we visited. It was uncrowded and we were able to easily get beach chairs and shade.
This is a picture of the rocky shoals. It would probabaly hurt your feet to be thrown against them by a wave. |
