A Few of My Favorite Travel Adventures

USA Travel Adventures

Stephen at Lost Dutchman State Park, Arizona
Sometimes I wistfully think of all the many places I would like to see and adventures I wish I could have. Then I begin to count my blessings and realize that I've been privileged to do more than most. I'm very grateful for these opportunities, and many more.

American Travel Adventures

Backpacking solo for more than 1,000 miles along the Appalachian Trail, in 13 of the 14 states which the trail crosses.

Being charged by a 400 pound female Black Bear, with two cubs, while backpacking in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park. The bear charged to within striking distance. I left my backpack; she tore into it and took my food.

Close-up encounter with a Grizzly Bear while hiking in Alaska’s Denali National Park. The bear ran toward me from about 200 yards away and came to within about 12 feet. I discouraged the Grizzly from approaching closer by waving my arms and yelling.

Making a solo assent of Mt. Elbert, the highest mountain in Colorado, plus climbing the highest point in a total of 42 states.

Getting Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick which lodged itself into my navel while I was backpacking up Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina, highest point in the eastern USA.

Serving as chaplain of the day for the South Carolina House of Representatives, and having a private meeting with Governor Carol Campbell.

Being the guest of President Ronald Reagan at the White House in Washington, DC, on two different occasions.

Taking a day trip to Barrow, Alaska, above the Arctic Circle, and being stranded there overnight due to heavy fog.

Doing interviews with U.S. Presidential Candidate, Bob Dole, V.P. Candidate, Jack Kemp, Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, plus numerous other members of congress, state governors, and other interesting people.

Working for a week picking grapes in the Yakima Valley of Washington State.

Riding a mule, with Karen, down the highest sea cliffs on earth, to visit the leper colony of Kalapapa, on the Hawaiian island of Molokai.

Hitch-hiking throughout the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain states at the age of 19 and 20.
World Travel Adventures

Being arrested in Istanbul, Turkey for (unknowingly) entering the country illegally.

Being arrested near the banks of the Jordan River in Jordan, for (again unknowingly) trying to exit the country without the proper papers.

Preaching, through an interpreter, at Rue du Centre Church of God in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the largest Protestant church in the country, to an overflow crowd of more than 3,000.

Visiting a service at the world’s largest church, Yoido Full Gospel Church, in Seoul, Korea.

Being with one of the earliest groups of journalists to enter the former Soviet Union during the era of Glasnost and Perestroika, before the fall of Communism.

Riding a train from Moscow to Helsinki and sharing a sleeping car with a total of 4 journalists (2 male and 2 female) the others 3 being from Germany, England and Israel.

Taking the train from Canton, China, to Hong Kong, when Hong Kong was still under British control.

Spending 3 days on the Philippine Island of Mindoro, sleeping in a nipa (bamboo) hut with a dirt floor, and speaking at a small indigenous church which had never before had a visit from an outside missionary.

Getting malaria in the Philippines, and being treated by an American trained doctor in Baguio.

Backpacking alone for three days in the Puerto Rican rain forest, and spending the night on the summit of El Toro.

Being in Caracas, Venezuela when a curfew was called after rioting resulted in the deaths of more than 200 people.

Being the lunch guest of Senator Henry Hsu, Republic of China, at one of the hotels he owns in Taipei, Taiwan.

Scuba Diving off the Caribbean islands of Tobago and Grenada, without certification.

Conducting a Sunday morning worship service for a boatload of pilgrims on the Sea of Galilee, in Israel.

Spending the night on the 22nd Story of the Tokyo Hilton when I was awakened by the bed shaking from a earthquake.

Honeymooning with my beautiful bride, Karen, at Ruthin Castle, Wales.

Swimming with sting rays in the Cayman Islands.

Taking a solo bus trip through Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua in Central America.

Being arrested at gunpoint in Managua, Nicaragua, for taking unauthorized photos of a military installation.

Climbing up an active volcano in Guatemala and walking on hot lava that melted the soles of my shoes.
