Steve's travel favorites

Natural Beauty

First light of day on the Eiger
My most favorite travel memories come from the natural beauty that the world has to offer. Have you ever seen something and felt like you were the only one witnessing the incredible sight? Travel contains many pleasant surprises. It could be waking up and seeing the sun's morning light gracing the top of a majestic mountain. It could even be a view from the plane, the train, or any other mode of transportation that makes your day. Regardless of where I travel, there is always some effort to spend part of the trip outdoors regardless of the climate. Some of these experiences have been very rewarding. Whether my journey brings me to the Northern Lights, magnificent waterfalls, lush forests, rocky coasts, or lofty mountains, they would not have happened without the good fortune and ability to travel. These natural wonders are the gift of God, and seeing them is also a gift in my eyes.

History

Reading a historical textbook in a classroom is one thing that most of us forget over time. Then one day, a place is encountered that recalls that lesson from long ago. Such visits give whole new meaning to the history. It could be a palace, a battlefield, a temple, or even a vast necropolis. Classroom learning is fine, but to me, nothing can compare to the ability to travel and actually see the place I have heard so much about.

Architecture

Man-made things can be impressive. Of course, I hold natural wonders to the highest regard. Yet, my favorite cities in the world are those which have managed to really stand out and assume their own identity in terms of architecture. The style does not even have to be from the same time period. It is fascinating to explore cities that have structures recalling many different times of its past. In a modern world of cookie-cutter housing districts, it is always a treat to go to a place where each home, church, and public building is unique. That is another joy of travel.
The harbor of Marsaxlokk, Malta
I suppose what makes me travel is the curiosity about the world around me. It is a pleasure to wake up and see new and different places. Sometimes I like to revisit some favorite places too. Travel allows one the chance to try and adapt to new surroundings and perhaps flourish in them. One thing that is most fortunate about all of my travel experiences, and that is that each place has offered something very positive. With that track record, no wonder I am always ready to go somewhere!
