The Edinburgh Petting Zoo (and working farm) | Edinburgh Petting Zoo and Working Farm |
I loved this place. John and I were a bit curious about the place. We found it in a tourist guide under "free things to do". Considering we are a poor student and instructor respectively, we walked over from Castle Rock Hostel. Ducks, many varieties of chickens, a few cows, several LARGE pigs, turkeys, goats, sheep, horses, and rabbits greeted us around every turn. It's not a large place, but fun for a morning or afternoon activity if you enjoy animals. The picture is by far my favorite (other than the baby lambs) because it shows the most inventive way to recycle old stereo parts. Turn them into scarecrows! Waste not want not, folks! |
| | Edinburgh Writer's Museum I love this writer's museum. It is not only interesting, but it is completely free! The courtyard is also a lovely place to sit, rest and perhaps partake of a mini picnic. |
| Princes Street Garden and National Gallery |
| | Scottish National Gallery, Princes Street Gardens The National Gallery is a lovely place full of amazing art works. This past May they had a special show of goddess works, both ancient and modern. It was a beautiful display. Well worth a good walk through. And for free, it's not a bad price either! For that you can affort to sit and enjoy a coffee in their downstairs cafe.
OR
Like the locals, grabs a snack ro sandwich from M&S across Princes Street and go sit on the lawn of Princes Street Gardens up near or down below the Scott Monument. On a sunny day, there's nothing better than laying about with fellow city dwellers and people waching. |
| | Just Wandering About Can sometimes lead you to unexpected surprises. There are tons of closes and kirks to explore in Edinburgh. I always find my favorite places by just wandering. |
| Church of the Holy Rood, Stirling Scotland |
| | Church Services They are sometimes the best way to really experience a church or cathedral, even if you aren't particularly religious (which I'm not).
It's like hearing the echoes of long ago. Knowing you are standing, perhaps experiencing the same event as others through hundred of years, creates an amazing feeling of awe. |
| | Walking Scotland has some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever encountered in all my travels. It is so broad yet I always felt connected and safe. Odd how that works sometimes.
The West Highland Way, only one of many hikes through or across Scotland, is my next BIG trip. It's going to be an adventure like I've never experienced before. Really and truly out walking the country for a week.
Like everything on this page, it is free to walk. And only a few pounds to camp along the way. All in all, a walking holiday seems the way to go. |
| | Parks Public parks are a great way to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature, and usually some very nice art as well. This particular park had the most unusual statues. |
