Great quotes

by ocicat - last update: Dec 20, 2007

I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I lived just the length of it. I want to live the width of it.

"Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live."

Pride leaves us when we want something enough to lie.

Any given moment can change your life. You just have to BE there.

Faith is believing that one of two things will happen. That there will be something solid for you to stand on - OR that you will be taught to fly.

One of the hardest things to realize is that our 'someday' is right now.

A good friend will come and bail you out of jail... but a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "Dang...that was fun!"

Not all who wander are lost!

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely; but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, plane ticket in the other, body used up, totally worn out and screaming," WOO HOO" what a ride!
~Author Unknown

It's never too late to be who you want to be!

“The traveler was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes "sight-seeing."

“I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move.”

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.”

“Never go on trips with anyone you do not love.”

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow."

All growth is a leap in the dark, a spontaneous act without the benefit of experience. -- Henry Miller

Courage is the mastery of fear...not the absence of fear.

Friendship is never limited by distance or by time. It can reach around the world...and last forever.

Each of us has the power of transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary -- the everyday into the special. -- Johnnetta Cole

To be true to yourself take some action-- no matter how small.

As soon as you feel too old to do something, do it!

It's where we go, and what we do when we get there, that tells us who we are. --Joyce Carol Oates

Never let the odds keep you from pursuing what you know in your heart you were meant to do.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So, throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. -- Mark Twain

The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best. -- Epictetus

We judge ourselves by what we feel we are capable of doing; others judge us by what we have done. -- Longfellow

I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

We will all admit, the world is confused...Will we now admit the solution can start with us?

If you're not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem!

Chapter Two

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.
Thomas A. Edison (1847 - 1931)

The camera doesn't make a bit of difference. All of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE.
Ernst Haas

If we were to wake up some morning and find that everyone was the same race, creed and color, we would find some other cause for prejudice by noon.
George Aiken

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
Chinese Proverb

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.
Clifton Fadiman (1904 - 1999)

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Robert Frost (1874 - 1963), The Road Not Taken

Those who love deeply never grow old; they may die of old age, but they die young. -Sir Arthur Wing Pinero

"I am not the same; having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world."

"There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle."
- Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

"The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them."
- Mark Twain (1835-1910)

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
- Edmund Burke (1729-1797)

The truth of the matter is that you always know the right thing to do. The hard part is doing it.
General H. Norman Schwarzkopf

Dance like nobody's watching; love like you've never been hurt. Sing like nobody's listening; live like it's heaven on earth."
-- Mark Twain

"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."
- Galileo Galilei

Do, or do not. There is no 'try'."
- Yoda ('The Empire Strikes Back')

Life is not measured by the number of breathes we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. ~ George Carlin, Guideposts, 8/04

I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I lived just the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well. ~ Diane Ackerman

I don’t want to look back—I want to keep looking ahead. I’d hate for my defining moment to be my past. ~ Scott Hamilton

Living--
To touch the cup with eager lips and taste, not drain it;
To woo and tempt and court a bliss-and not attain it;
To fondle and caress a joy, yet hold it lightly,
Lest it become necessity and cling too tightly;
To watch the sun set in the west without regretting;
To hail its advent in the east-the night forgetting;
To smother care in happiness and grief in laughter;
To hold the present close-not questioning hereafter;
To have enough to share-to know the joy of giving;
To thrill with all the sweets of life-
IS LIVING.

Dare To Risk--
To laugh is to risk appearing the fool. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. To reach for another is to risk involvement. To expose your ideas, your dreams, before a crowd is to risk their loss. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To live is to risk dying. To believe is to risk failure. But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The people who risk nothing, do nothing, have nothing, are nothing. They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, live. Chined by their attitudes, they are slaves; they have forfeited their freedome. Only a person who risks is Free.
You know, we just don't recognize the most significant moments of our lives while they're happening. Back then I thought, well, there'll be other days. I didn't realize that that was the only day. -"Field Of Dreams"-

I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I lived just the length of it. I want to live the width of it.

Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you're scared to death.
Harold Wilson (1916 - 1995)

It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare.
Mark Twain (1835 - 1910)

You see things; and you say, 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say, "Why not?"
George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950)

Patterning your life around other's opinions is nothing more than slavery.
Lawana Blackwell

Sometimes when we are generous in small, barely detectable ways it can change someone else's life forever.

A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds.
Sir Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626)
*An excellent way to view life!

The Account

A 92-year-old small, well-poised and proud man moved to a nursing home today. Even though he is legally blind, he is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably cut and shaved perfectly. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready.

As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet curtains that had been hung on his window.

"I love it," he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.

"Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait."

"That doesn't have anything to do with it," he replied.

"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ... it's how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. "It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do.

Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away. Just for this time in my life.

Life is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in.

Here is the test to find whether your mission on earth is finished. If you're alive, it isn't. -- Richard Bach

Some people die at twenty-five and arent' buried until they are seventy-five.

"There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never
did, who won't anymore, and who always will. So don't stress about people from your past...there's a reason why they didn't make it to your future"

I'm different, let this not upset you' - Paracelsus.
