Welcome to Amsterdam!

by Phildagr8 - last update: Aug 10, 2006

Downtown

The square
there are many streets for pedestrians only. At night, the place is still alive. In other words, they do not "roll up the sidewalks" after any particular time. This picture is "the square", which is located behind one of the old palaces. There's also a monument that resembles the Washington Monument in DC, but it's a lot shorter.
Famous Department store - very expensive!

Some of the buildings are lit up quite differently

The infamous Red Light District

And of course you have to take a walking tour of the infamous Red Light District. There are red fluorescent lights above certain doors, which designate that door to be for special "services". The doors are, for the most part a window frame on hinges, so you can see exactly what is behind the door. When a person goes in and the door is closed, the curtain is moved across the window "for privacy".
French fries, in Euros.

French Fries! Ya gotta try 'em!

The french fries here are somewhat different. They're about 1cm x 1cm (huge!) and the custom here is to get them with mayonaise! If you like mayo and you like fries, then ya gotta try it. It's not that bad (I think it's an acquired taste), but I still prefer mine with ketchup and mustard. They have 16 different condiments you can get, but keep in mind that there's an extra charge for a single condiment, usually about .25 Euro's.

The fries come in a paper wrapper shaped like an ice cream cone. The cost is in Euro's. The picture below shows the fries with mayo.
Visit Cannabis college.

Cannabis College!

Yup, everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask. Well, this place has the answers to all your questions, and then some! In fact, they have a Questionnaire that will quiz your knowledge, and its a tough one! They have tons of information. Cannabis...It's just not for smoking anymore. They make rope, hand bags, and there's the Volcano mister, which vaporizes the material so you don't inhale the nasty by-products of combustion. Check it out!
They close at 6pm so get there early!
The French Fry place

Here's a better picture of the French Fry place

This is the French Fry place I went to. The street has a train rail running along the walking road in front of it.

Keep your fries close, because the birds will swoop down onto your arm and fly away with a fry! If you drop one, they won't be shy, either.
Here's the local Mall - nice architecture.

The Mall

Dying to get some souvenirs? Well, you can get them at this mall if you want to get ripped off. This mall is like a department store mall. Everything is overpriced, and you can get clothes and such for a lot less money anywhere else. It looks like an old building on the outside, but it's totally refurbished on the inside. I was there in March and I was freezing, so I ducked in this mall to warm up and see what was inside. There are 3 floors of stores, the top floor has a small soup n salad place.

If you're looking to shop, you gotta go to Albert Culpert market, where you can get almost anything!
The Market on Albert Culpert Street

The Market - You can get ANYTHING there!

This market is crowded, but that's the sign of a good restaurant AND marketplace. I'm sure I didn't spell the street correctly, but they have just about anything and everything. The street is 'pedestrian only' and it seems like it's about 6 blocks long. You can take the 24 train to get there. and another train at the other end. I saw a t-shirt that was XXXXL.
Clothes, raw seafood, nuts, cheeses, furniture, trinkets, etc. Watch your sizes as it may be in metric.
It's all in Euro's.
There was a guy playing a string base for change. It was great!
