If you decide to do something different and walk up to the Eagles Nest follow the road from the bus station and this is the gated entrance. It took me 2 1/4 hours but I like to take things slow. There are some places to sit & rest on the way up and I also took plenty of drinks, which you will need. |
| | Bridge over the main road You should reach this bridge which crosses over the main road within a few minutes of the gated entrance. As the climb is steep to start with, you should know by now if it is for you or not. At this point you have to keep an eye out for the coaches as there is no footpath. Later on, the coaches only, use the road, and you have to turn off on to a different minor road. It is signposted and you are not allowed to use the coach road. |
Minor road One of the main advantages and from a safety point of view, using the minor road it is quiet and scenic. I only saw one person and one vehicle during my walk up.
| | Mountain views If you choose to walk up to the top of the Eagles Nest there are some wonderful views. |
Snow Even in July there was still snow around on the mountain.
| | Mist on the mountain It can still be misty on the mountain in July. When you get to the top you will be warm, but everyone else will be well wrapped up. |
Waiting area At the end of the entrance tunnel there is a waiting area for the lift. As nearly everyone uses the coaches I have never been asked to show my bus ticket which also includes a ride in the lift.
| | The Terrace By now you should have cooled down and probably tried out the restaurant. Time to have a wander around. The terrace in the Eagles Nest now contains old photographs, originally there was sun beds laid out. |
