Castro Marim | Castro Marim from the fort |
Castro Marim is a small town on the Portuguese/Spanish border, dominated by its massive fort from where this picture was taken. The surrounding area is one of the top birding spots in Portugal but on the day we visited all the birds had flown .. probably up the road to Quinta de Marim! |
| | Inside the Fort The fort is free to enter, so you might as well do so, good views of the town and across to Spain |
Abandoned Farmhouse Abandoned farms abound in the Algarve, some of them are up for sale if you fancy a bit of rennovation. Compared to UK prices these places are a bargain.
| | Faro Faro is the "capital" city of the Algarve region, to most people arriving on package breaks to the beaches Faro is just an airport. How wrong they are .. the place is well worth spending a couple of days exploring |
Street art This is an interesting piece of street art (it's far too good to be regarded as graffiti) in Faro, I wonder what the gentleman was thinking?
| Closer look at the street art |

Tile mural Art of a more traditional style here in Faro, Azulejos are painted decorative tiles and these can be seen all over Portugal.
| | The city of Storks Visit Faro in the spring and I challenge anyone NOT to able to notice a stork, they are everywhere .. wherever it is feasible for a stork to perch and build its nest it will do so. Chimneys are a favourite but so too are streetlights and belltowers, the birds are seemingly oblivious to all the noise and kerfuffle that is happening below them |
