Even better than diving here! | Mom & Cap'n Dexter of the Fantasea, with stingray |
On my first visit to Grand Cayman, I dove at Stingray City (see Sports Tips for a complete run down of that hilarious experience). That was fun, but to be honest I think it was even better & certainly much easier to just snorkel this famous spot. We went on an afternoon excursion out of the main marina in Georgetown this time (a wise move, since the distance traveled by the boat is minimal from that area). Oour boat tour was hosted by Captain Dexter of Fantasea Adventures, on his catamaran. After an unhurried and fun stop at the Stingray City shallow sandbar, we were taken at the end to a beautiful snorkeling spot, on Barrier Reef. |

| | Main Attraction: The Stingrays I was surprised to learn that most of the people who experience this trip for the first time are very apprehensive about it, and know next to nothing about stingrays. Let me assure you, every last one of them was purely delighted to discover how friendly, gentle and relatively harmless these creatures really are, despite their dangerous-sounding name!
The largest are about 4 feet across in size, and the smaller ones are only about 12" across. They fly all around you like graceful birds, coming in to be fed by the tourists. |

The only thing you must be careful to do is not to jump around too quickly. If one is resting on the bottom, you don't want to step on it, that's the only time you need to worry about getting stung. The proper way to move around is by shuffling your feet (which is always a good idea on any sandy beach area anyway, since rays like sandy bottoms). |

| | A lovely afternoon sail Our trip on the big catamaran, the Fantasea, was chartered for us by our hoteliere, Marleine at the Turtle Nest Inn. She negotiates a little discount for those staying at the inn, but his rates are good in any case, approximately $30 US per person. Here's Captain Dexter's Fantasea website. |
