Lake Manyara

The Lake

Waters edge
The lake itself is quite a long way from the nearest point you can drive to. However, the is are so many other animals and birds to see it doesn't really matter.

In this photo you can see the line of Flamingo at the top of the picture. This was some way away but the line of pink birds went on for what seemed like miles.

However, the marsh and other smaller areas of water are populated by hippo, crocodile, and just about every type of wading bird you can imagine. Also, the buffalo like to come to drink there.
Rift Valley wall above Lake Manyara

Rift Valley Wall

The Rift Valley Wall strecthes for hundreds of miles, and this is the view of it from above Lake Manyara.
Breakfast time

It's not always that pretty

What you get is an un-sanitised view of the world and the food chain. Unfortunately for this Cape Buffalo, he became part of the chain and was breakfast for these Vultures and Maribu Storks.
Sun rise over the Rift Valley wall

Not just about the animals

Lake Manyara is a great place to visit, not just for the animals but the fantastic scenery. I have been very early in the morning, going into the park just before sunrise, and also late afternoon leaving when the sun goes down. They were quite different experiences but both great. Watching the sun come up and break through the clouds above the Rift Valley wall was just brilliant.
Monitor Lizard

Not just mammals and birds

Although not very commonly seen, you may get the chance to see a Monitor Lizard or snakes in the park. This one was sleeping down by the waters edge.
