My Austria
The valley I come from
A CRASH COURSE IN YODELLING
Enjoy :)
For all who are into "earth energy lines "---- the valley I was born in lies at the cross section of 2 major Energy lines .... which makes the area a universal power-arena.... but as with all things it can be used for positive or negative purposes.... there is a Dolemn stone (a celtic site) not too far away from where I grew up ... and if you pass under the stone formation that forms a "gate" .... your centre of balance will be off for a while ---- as it is exactly on the main power-line.... people get all sorts of weird emotions when walking through - some faint, some wobble around as if drunk, some get nausea.... a truly weird and wonderful place... I used to imagine the area with a few druids practicing their magic .... :D |
| | little fire-gekkos of the alps FIRE-SALAMANDER ---- yes, they are little dragons, well lizard-like and just about the length of ones hand.
But they are a quite interestig species, with their black, shiny bodies and the bright-yellow pattern .
There is a lot more to those little critters though..... here are some facts:
and some weird facts can be found on: Medivial Bestiary
*
Rather cool Salamander facts:
>Fire salamanders are squirting toxic secretions more than six feet to discourage foes... so you don't want to handle them!
The fire salamander is the ONLY amphibian that does not hatch from an egg. Instead, the babies develop inside the mother?s body and are life-births.
Life span: up to 55!! years, depending on species
Salamanders can?t hear sounds, so they don?t make any either. However, some species can hug the ground to pick up sound vibrations with their bodies.
All in all a fascinating animal, don't you agree?? |
| | * Rarest Raptor of the Alps
Lammergeier - and Old World vulture --- used to be known as: OSSIFRAGE (or Bone Crusher) ... becauses it woul drop it's pray's carcas from a great hight to crush their bones so to get to the bone marrow.
Unlike most vultures, Lammergeiers do NOT have a bald head. This huge bird is 105-125 cm!!! long with a 2.5-2.7meters wingspan, and is quite unlike most other vultures in flight due to its long narrow wings and wedge shaped tail.
It was near extinction but could be successfully re-introduced to Europe.
According to legend, the Greek playwright Aeschylus was killed when a tortoise was dropped on his bald head by a Lammergeier which mistook it for a stone. :D ... what a drama!!! |
| | * AUSTRIAN HERBAL 1-on-1 * ****** EDELWEISS ******
Edelweiss is a protected plant in Austria.
Early usage of the plant as a healing herb include cooking it with Milk & Honey to help tummy-aches.
But the plant was also used in witch-craft for Love-spells. And a flower with a specially strong stem is said to have magic qualities. |
| | * Herbal know-ledge
1) Baerlauch ----bear's garlic ;)
This plant is a wild relative of chives.
The leaves are collected and eaten as salad, boiled or as a kind of pesto. They were used as fodder as well. Cows that have fed on ramsons give milk that slightly tastes of garlic (yuck), and butter made from this milk used to be very popular in 19th century Austria.
This plant has been found also on neolithic sites --- so even our cave-dwelling acnestors have used it culinary for thousands of years. |
| | * ENZIAN
You can also make "Schnapps" out of this plant - the roots are used to make the drink... PROST |
