Clitheroe

by mamawinnie - last update: Mar 26, 2006

Clitheroe castle

Historic town in the Ribble Valley.

Clitheroe is a market town with its origins pre dating the 12th century Norman keep that over looks the town.
Clitheroe market dates back to 1283 and is still up and running.

The area has a wide variety of coaching inns and eating places.

The castle grounds a well kept but can be steep for some to walk up.
In the grounds is a museum which has a varied selection of interesting items.
Pendle Hill

Pendle Hill, witch country.

In 1612 ten witches from the Pendle area were sent to the scaffolds to be hung. These convicted witches and there supposed victims resided in the Pendle area.
Today the 370 year old legend still carries on with people making trips to Pendle Hill especially for midnight on Halloween.
Pendle Hill is a fantastic site and is still promident for all to see. It is easy to get to and has many footpaths over it but care must be taken or you might get lost in the mist !
