I replied to a question like this at a different site to a person living in Michigan, USA. Assuming you're travelling from Detroit, Michigan to Sydney, Australia flying out on May 1st and returning May 31st, you will be looking at the following in US dollars (assuming you can do an electronic visa, which applies to US passport holders)

Airfare $1,276 (from kayak.com)
Insurance $100 (worldnomads.com)
Visa $20 (http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/ETAAus4En.html)
Guidebook $25 (amazon.com search for "Lonely Planet Australia 2005")
Bus pass $550 (oz experience buses from Sydney to Cairns... other options, cheaper to book once you're in Australia!!!)

Airfare from Cairns back to Sydney to catch your flight back... if you book with virgin blue online http://bookings.virginblue.com.au it'll be about $100.

Dayly expenses:
Hostel bed $15 to $25 (say $20 on average)
Food $3-10 (say $5 on average per meal, less if you cook)
Transport get a bus pass
Beer sky is the limit here :) say $5 to 10 per day

Keep in mind that the expensive thing of australia are the adventure sports such as scuba diving, sky diving, bungee jumping, snorkling, etc etc etc... some of these can add up to hundreds of dollars.

F - Finally getting around to reading your blog. I notice that you omitted the fact that you abandoned me halfway up cradle mountain and I had to climb with another 2 ladies, one of which had been similarly abandoned by her travel companion.
