New Zealand - take a look

by judz - last update: Sep 23, 2006

North Island photos

Welcome to my NZ Travelogue pages.
Mt Maunganui - a very popular summer destination. The population increases dramatically around Xmas and New Year.
Huka Falls - Taupo
1 hours drive from Rotorua.

Rotorua

The bubbling mud pools at Rotorua
Rotorua is the North Island's tourist mecca. The area is known for its Maori culture, thermal parks with geyers, bubbling mud and sulphur vents, trout fishing and a wide variety of show and parks for tourists. Although Queenstown is officially the adventure capital of New Zealand, Rotorua is ideal for the adventure loving tourist. From rafting to four wheel drive volcanic tours those requiring an adrenalin rush will find it here.
The Champage Pool at Waiotapu
A traditional Maori poi dance.

The South Island

The South Island which is much more rugged than the North with wide open spaces.

South Island

Franz Josef Glacier.
Lake Wakatipu - Queenstown
Queenstown which lies on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and has a population of around 4000. It is one of the most visited spots in the South Island
Mirror Lakes - Te Anau - this is an amazing spot...it's on the way to Milford Sound - has a nice boardwalk there also
A waterfall in Haast Pass
The lighthouse at the northern most tip of New Zealand
Pancake rocks at Punakaiki called this because of the formation
Picton - the centre of the Marlborough Sounds This is where you will start your South Island tour, if coming from Wellingon on the interisland ferry.
Whale watching at Kaikoura
The Avon River in Christchurch
Lake Wanaka about 45 kms from Queenstown
One of the cruise boats that do the Milford Sounds tour
The South Island where Lord of the Rings was filmed

Rotorua

Rotorua is in the centre of the North Island, a 2 hour drive from Auckland and is in the heart of the geothermal activity. The hot rocks heat the ground water, which eventually burst out of the ground creating geysers.
90 mile beach in Northland
A typical geyser which can be seen from the Geyserland Hotel (pictured above)
You can do short bush walks around the picturesque lakes
The Polynesian pools in Rotorua where you can relax in a private mineral pool or have a massage. There are a lot of outdoor pools also.
Thermal pools and boiling mud pools
An active volcano in the Bay of Plenty
A thermal pool at Rotorua

Answers to frequently asked questions

The best time to visit NZ depends on whether you want the snow or the sun. The hottest months are December, to March. We are located in the Southern Hemisphere so it is completely opposite to the Northern Hemisphere.
If you want the snow then June until September is best.

NZ is the first country to see the new day. Therefore, if it's 8am Wednesday, it will be 4am in Singapore, 7pm Tuesday in London, 3pm Tuesday in New York and 12pm Tuesday in Los Angeles. You will cross the international date line so will lose a day in your travels (make it up on the way home).

Los Angeles to Auckland takes around 14 hours, Singapore to Auckland about 9 hours and London to Auckland about 24 hours.

We drive on the left hand side of the road and the speed limit is 100 km on the highways and 50 in the urban areas.

An approximate cost for everyday items in $NZ
Loaf of bread $1.70 Litre of milk $1.70
glass of beer $3.00 Movie ticket $11.00
Photo developing $14.00 Can of Coca cola $1.20
Big mac burger $3.00 1 litre of petrol $.94c

Most overseas flights fly into Auckland but if you are coming from the West (Australia, Kuala Lumpar or Japan) you can fly direct to Christchurch.

The sun is the most intense and dangerous in the world. On a clear summers day, you can expect to get burnt in just 12 minutes without protective sunscreen.

New Zealand currency has 100 cents to the dollar. Coins come in 5,10,20 amd 50 cents, $1 and $2 denominations. Notes come in 5, 10, 50 and 100 dollars.

Credit cards are widely accepted throughout New Zealand and Automatic Teller Machines are widespread, so you don't need to carry lots of cash.

Tips are accepted for good service, particularly in the hospitality industry, but some workers feel good service is part of their job and may decline tips if offered so don't be offended.

Stewart Island

Oban - the only settlement on Stewart Island has a population of around 300
The buses travel along the beach on the way to Cape Reinga.
The Foxeaux Express leaves from Bluff twice a day for the 1 hour trip to Oban - the Foveaux Strait is one of the roughest stretches of water in the world...not always though..was lovely and calm when we went over..

View from the Yankee River Hut

A beautiful sunset taken from home
The beautiful Bay of Islands
Auckland - a city of 1.65 million people.
The Auckland sky tower which has a 24 hour casino and a viewing tower with a clear glass floor (not for the feint hearted)
