A pale westerner, A buddha, and A scorpion kebab

In the Land of the Rising Sun

China will always be a special place to me........it was my first major trip, and one that completely changed my perspective on life...... and somewhere that I would dearly love to return to discover more of.

Early August 2003, and i was staying in Hong Kong having only planned a short break. But almost straight away I completely fell in love with the place. So straight away I set about extending my stay in the Far Flung......

China is an inspiring and an enchanting world with so many contrasting cities and landscapes......it can be beautiful, unforgiving, bewildering, brutal, breath-taking and loving all at the same time........ it is such an interesting world.

Truly intoxicating

The feelings you get wandering the clogged streets of China are difficult to put into words...... I was constantly in awe of the amount of people, bewidered by everything that was going on around me.....

The people are usually so friendly, although if travelling during chinese summer holidays beware of tonnes of students inviting you to their art exhibitions. I found this particularly in Shanghai!! Look after your cash!!

And one more thing, no trip to china would be complete without a trip to see an ancient buddha..... but be prepared there are many!! Just a light warning, do not use up all that pent-up enthusiasm for buddha's on the first couple, thats all.......

Discovering the past......and the food!!

The best piece of advice for visitors to China is to not limit your time to just seeing the main attractions.

In particular in Beijing, allow time to savour the older parts of the city; try the Peking Duck, stroll through the winding Hutong, and the Tiantan Gongyuan (temple of heaven park) etc etc.

Although inevitably you should make it your aim to find time to visit the Summer Palace, the Great Wall
and the Forbidden City (with on-site Starbucks)!..... is nothing no longer sacred?!

Pale Westerner

After that long trip, i soon got back into the routine of work. And heres yours truly, asleep as ever, on the couch with pet cat in tow.

Just dont ask about the Scorpion Kebab....

Trying New Things :-0

Yes......Thats a scorpion on a stick.
Yum

At this food market near Wanfujing street in Beijing, there were also starfish kebabs, octopus, frogs legs, other amphibious tempters, as well as the old favourite... chickens feet...!!

I was also surprised (as most westerners are on their first visit to asia) that alot of the food was still alive in front of your very eyes!!
I guess, atleast you know its fresh =)
