With apologies to Samuel Taylor Coleridge | Drifting snow off iceberg |
You just have to be impressed by icebergs. I suspect that it's impossible to take too many photos of them. And, for my money, the best poem about the Antarctic and icebergs was written by Coleridge.
Back in 1797, probably inspired by Captain Cook's circumnavigation of Antarctica, Coleridge wrote a marvellous poem"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner". In it, he told the salutory tale of an old seaman who turned up at a wedding and related his misadventures at sea. These began when his ship was blown far to the south and caught in mist and ice. Later an albatross came along and brought winds, which took the ship north again - at which stage the old sailor made the fatal mistake of shooting the albatross...... but that's another story. |
| | Extract from "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" "..... The ship drove fast, loud roared the blast, The southward aye we fled." |
| Mackellar Islands & iceberg |
| | And now there came both mist and snow, And it grew wondrous cold And ice, mast-high, came floating by, As green as emerald. |
| Sailing close by an iceberg |
| | |
| | The land of ice, and of fearful sounds where no living thing was to be seen. |
| | And through the drifts the snowy clifts Did send a dismal sheen Nor shapes of men nor beasts we ken --- The ice was all between. |
| | The ice was here, the ice was there, The ice was all around It cracked and growled, and roared and howled, Like noises in a swound! |
| | Finally, an albatross came along and the wind returned....... |
