| | a WONDERFUL kept secret! I just had a memorable flight with Uzbekistan airlines- Uzbekistan for some reason conjures up ominous dreams of mysterious fantasy and from different experiences I had, ie. BIMAN airlines, I definately thought that Uzbekistan airlines will be added to my "building character" experience in life, but I was pleasantly proved wrong! Flying from Bangkok - via Tashkent- to Riga. At first I found my gate going onto the airplane, and felt a bit rushed being sent to a rather tattery seat near the back of the plane with some of the male flight attendant's baggage on the seat, some of them bumping me to move while they collected their belongs. Ummmph- was my initial thought but I just kept silent. Moments later a female flight attendant, first speaking to me in Russian, later telling me with a nice smile that I am welcome to move to another seat . I had some really good Uzbek wine, AZIA beer ( Uzbek beer) which tasted fowl a bit but maybe that was from my myopic standards? I tried all the different fruit juices as well which were good- recommending the cherry juice. Later an adventure in experiencing Uzbek dining on the plane. It was the first time to taste Central Asian style food- I was impressed! It was a hint of Turkish ( something like Kofta) and Indian a bit. ( peas and rice with ghee at the bottom of the rice- tasty!) interesting sweet desserts ( I am a sucker for chocolate cake and this was like a yummy chocolate brownie/cake inbetween category) and two idifferent salads- very good- finished up with more Uzbek wine and I was pleased! The music selection was interesting as well as I found the selection with Uzbek music and was really enchanted with its emotional and haunting sounds! I listened to it the whole flight- I went to the loo with my toothbrush and toothpaste to clean my teeth. The flight attendant saw me in the queue for the loo and thougtfully gave me a glass of water to rinse my mouth- again with a smile! I left the airplane with a pleasant experience- even on the return flight. The rather downside of the trip was a long wait at boring Tashkent airport- not really in the airport but in an old fading, but in its heyday was a glamourous copy of a Russian Czar imitation theatre decor waiting "manor", it had a dining room with character and oriental rugs ( shabby) all around. I slept on the floor between other people's feet as my flight arrived at 1 am and left at 5 am! I will definately fly Uzbek airlines again- the price was really RIGHT as well! |
