Vietnam is famous for its colorful market scenes. Literally every square centimetre of free space may be used to sell things - starting from tiny screws over juicy pineapples to kitschy toy cats. |
| Stop and shop - Dong Xuan market |
| | The beautiful Dong Xuan market area is located just north of the Old Quarter. The actual market takes place in an ugly hall - rebuilt after the devastating 1994 fire - but the more interesting view are the streets surrounding the market hall. Vendors sell more or less everything that can be eaten. |
| The hall of fabrics - Tran Xuan Soan |
| | But there are several other big markets in Hanoi, too. The area around Tran Xuan Soan market is dedicated to selling fruits as well as clothes. The finest fabrics can be bought here to have a suit or dress tailored in only a few days time. Half of my clothes were bought there... ;-) |
| | Another big market is Hang Da Market. This place is a no go for vegetarians - animals wait to be sold in horrible conditions. 100 mice in a small box or 10 cats in one of the same size are not seldom... Birds of every kind flutter helplessly in cages - packed with approximately 150 members of the same species. |
| Hello, I need one screw... |
| | Parts of the city are dedicated to selling just one product. In South Hanoi, there's a quarter in which all kinds of metal products are sold. It's a fascinating experience to wander through the streets and discover that even screws of 5mm can be bought single. |
| | Finally, the markets offer great photograph motives. All kinds of fruit are usually piled up in pyramids. Sometimes, this almost looks like a still life! |
