Rejoice --there are happy children in the world

by melosh - last update: Jul 27, 2006

Beautiful children populate the traveler's world.

School watching folk dancing, Morelia, Mexico
They are curious, friendly, shy, smart, excited and generally represent hope. But they can also be fearful, hateful, unhappy, cruel, immoral and desperate. If you have not seen both, you are travelling with your eyes closed. Fortunately the first characterization is what is most commonly seen even among children living in very poor conditions. I am not sure that I have any pictures of children demonstrating the second characterization, but this does not mean that their images are not burned into my soul. When I find pleasure in seeing children of the first type, it is partly because I am aware that not all children have this chance. I never blame the children.

A father's joy, Peru
Selling flowers and reading the paper, Guatemala

Mom does hair styling in West Africa

Bob, Really enjoyed your account of your return trip to Liberia. Some parallels with my own experience - I met my wife whilst teaching in Botswana back in the 80s. We've yet to return there though. Thanks for some superb insights, Mike
