Edinburgh, Scotland

Holyrood Palace

Holyrood Palace
Finding Edinburgh too drafty, the monarchs of Scotland built Holyrood Palace. It is still the Queen's official residence in Edinburgh and is situated at the end of the Royal Mile.

Salisbury Crags

Near Holyrood Palace are the Salisbury Crags, the remains of glaciated rocks. The highest points of the crags is Arthur's Seat, an extinct volcano. The trail up the crags is very steep and rocky, and not for those who tire easily. However, it provides excellent views of Edinburgh's skyline.

Edinburgh Castle

Situated atop an ancient volcano core, Edinburgh Castle is in the city centre of Edinburgh. It is at the top of the Royal Mile leading to Holyrood Palace. Though a tourist attraction, it is still the main headquarters of the British Army in Scotland.
