Africa, Summer 2002: Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe....

by Durfun - last update: Dec 24, 2005

Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, Curios stalls

Buying authentic wooden articles at the market

Nairobi, Kenya

Dining at the UNIQUE & famous Carnivore restaurant

Here they serve all kinds of game meat, wild animals, most of which are caught from the parks. First time I got crocodile meat, was very nice actually, they use the tail muscles for this. Wildebeest tastes yummy too, nothing like beef! Hart beest is also good.

They have several dance floors here, playing a variety of themes

Harare, Zimbabwe

In Chisipite, Harare, with our generous host Bjorn

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

At Victoria Falls airport

The striking Victoria Falls Safari Lodge with it's famous Boma restaurant. Here you sit & sip whilst looking over this HUGE water hole and see all the animals approach in turn (and hordes), kicking up huge dust clouds, to drink water; and get ambushed by predators...

The A' Zambezi lodge, it backs onto the Zambezi, hippos come over at dawn and leave their 'deposits' behind, cna see the mighty Falls in the background, and all the spray in the sky..... absolutely breathtaking!!

Later I did my 1st bungee-jump off the bridge linking Zambia-Zimbabwe, a drop of 300 feet (111m), at 90USD, I swear my number in the queue was: 13!! (lucky for me , as a survived to relive the memory!!)

'Boiling Pot', swimming/wading in is banned here as the currents are so strong

The Victoria Falls themselves are breathtaking; we can view it by walking along the 'curtain' from both countries... at some parts you get very close, and the spray/mist is superb & mighty strong!!

Can even get a helicopter ride, highly recommended - to catch the enormous length of the whole falls, casn also it their drop (twice that of Niagara Falls!)

Livingstone, Zambia

Out boating to fish 'tigers' (tiger fish) in crocodile-infested waters!!
I was trailing my hand in the water till I saw a croc; till then I didn't 'think' crocs would be there!! My host freaked out...

Also, it was the 1st time I ever 'handled' (manhandled) a loaded rifle; thinking I was told it's not loaded, I pointed it straight at our host, but luckily he jumped & ran just b4 I pulled the trigger!!!! Boy, did I get a telling off!!!!!!!!!

Arusha, Tanzania

This is where we 'tanked' up on fuel, spare tyres & muchies, to head off into the wilderness.... Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater & the Great Serengeti Plains. The adventure of a lifetime..... All captured on 5.5 hours of video!!

Zanzibar, Tanzania

The Old Stone Town, with arabian influence & architecture

Blue Bay Resort, on the fabulous & pristine white East coast. We lapped it up in high luxury here... I had morning swims in the Indian Ocean.

At the South-Western tip I 'swam' with wild dolphins, deep in the ocean; it was more like I attempted to do so, as the whole school disappears as soon as you splash in!!! Barely managed to catch a glimpse of the whole bunch zoomind down into the dark depths!! Was worth it though, highly recommended.

Lilongwe, Malawi

Most flights south from Nairobi go via this airport.

Photos of the Giant Kilimanjaro from the skies (my plane), the peaks just 'puncture' the clouds and stan proud above them. It was a surreal sight, unimaginable, I'd never seen anything like it; the view is particularly great since it was calm weather!
