His Name is "Dippy." | Sartorial splendor in the snow |
Dippy is a diplodocus carnegii - named for the Scottish-born steel magnate, Andrew Carnegie, who bankrolled some explorations of dinoasaur fossil finds in the American west. Dippy stand frozen outside the Carnegie Museum / Library / Concert Hall complex in the Oakland neighborhood of the 'Burgh.
Some local pundits have done a psychological post-mortem of the diminutive magnate ( he was about 5'3" tall or 1.6 meters) and his craze to acquire the bones of the largest known dinosaur of the time for his new museum.
I drive past Dippy every night on my way home from work. Every winter Dippy gets a scarf. It always makes me smile. |
