Because representations of living things are forbidden in Islam, mosques are decorated with designs using abstract shapes and verses from the Koran using calligraphy to make curlicues and sweeping patterns. In Morocco the various shades of blue are used to great effect in fountains, water spouts etc. |
| | columns are decorated with mosaic, arches vary from traditional shapes to rounded arches, and frequently one arch leads to another and another. |

| | Every feature is a visual delight, all produced to glorify God. |
| | Outer buildings outside are courtyards, entered through arches. |
| | The green roofs, the fine workmanship of the carved filligree effect, the marble patterned courtyard are truly pleasing. |
| | Space is used to great effect, and the use of arches emphasises this. |
| | As well as the horizontal space created by the vast courtyard, the tall minaret brings in the vertical space. There are no ther high buildings , so the tower points upwards, somehow linking the earth and the heavens. |
