For my first venture into motoring on the continent of Europe I choose Denmark. I thought it would be a suitable destination for the first time I would be driving on the right, being a quiet and fairly flat country. The photo was taken in 1977 and my car at that time was a Volkswagen Beetle. The location is somewhere in Jutland. I cannot remember exactly where it was as it was so long ago now. |
| | Much More Confidence By 1979 I had gained much more confidence in motoring in Europe and this time my destination was Germany. Again I cannot remember precisely where the photo was taken but it's a layby somewhere and I was obviously having a break from driving. The car is an Alfa Romeo Alfasud. I had rather more hair than I do these days, and look at those bellbottoms! |
A Few Years On It's back to Denmark for this photo, and I know where it was taken in 1994. It's between Lokken and Blokus, again in Jutland, where the public road goes along the beach for quite a few kilometres. There are speed limit signs! Don't blame my 13 year-old daughter for sunbathing on my Fiat Tempra - I put her up to it!
| | Not So Long Ago In 2003 I spent a week self-catering in Hungary. I had an interesting drive down from Cuxhaven in Germany to where I had taken the ferry from Harwich. The journey took me through the Czech and Slovak Republics. The photo shows the cottage which I rented from a German couple. It was in the village of Gyenesdiás on the shore of Lake Balaton. Then I was driving a Volvo V40. |
The Most Recent In September 2005 I embarked on a grand tour of Europe, travelling through 10 countries. There was lots of motorway travelling on this trip. One of the places I stayed at was was the Ljubljana Resort in Ljubljana. This doubles up as a campsite and a hotel. I stayed in the hotel and the photograph shows this part of the complex and my Volvo V50 parked in the car park. The hotel was not the most visually appealing but my room was very, very good - spacious and with a big, clean bathroom.
