Journal Excerpt – Cara 8/02/05: After dinner we took a walk on the beach toward an amazing resort with a restaurant on stilts over the ocean. The lights on the bottom of the restaurant illuminated the water that was so clear and aquamarine. We could see schools of fish darting about. We walked up the platform into the posh restaurant. The floors were covered with Persian rugs and the tuxedoed staff worked by the soft glow of oil lamps. We walked the perimeter looking down into the water. It was unbelievable! We were undoubtedly out of place here in our dirty safari pants, tee shirts, and bear feet. For fear of being kicked out, we pretended to be the infamously rich “Van Hugernagens”. When people walked by we called each other “darling” and discussed our fictitious “portfolio” using the voices of the ‘Howells” from Gillian’s Island. I couldn’t stop laughing. It was so much fun. We explored the complex and found two additional restaurants, a gymnasium, and a gigantic lighted lagoon-like pool all interconnected by elevated platforms and bridges. John said it was like a cruise ship on land. Then reality struck and we walked back to our simple thatched banda disappearing into the night. It was a nice fantasy!
