My work in Graphics

by spitball - last update: Sep 3, 2006

Over the years

Bob the unemployed millwright worker
This is Bob, the unemployed millwright worker, he stands a little over 5 inches in height, I used a product called Sculpty, which they use in some animations such as Wallace & Grommit, I gave poor Bob to a friend, but before I did that I cast him in plaster, he sits looking grumpy at me from a shelf beside my computer, I guess to remind me, I'd better keep my day job.
Tug boat captain
I have, in the past, supplemented my income by drawing peoples characatures, I would require some info about the person, such as, what their interests are, what they do, and I'd need a couple of photograph's or at least one very clear image. This guy I was told, was a tug boat captain who liked to downhill ski, this is what came to me, the original drawings were in colour, but those days I did not possess a scanner and many times it was a last minute photocopy, so all exept those I note would have been in colour.
Here is a bowl I painted for a girlfriend one year, here you can see the inside and underside, these "paint your own" places were around here in the 90's, very popular, but seem to have thinned out more and more.

Gandalf - 1976
We've all read {I hope} Tolkiens "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, maybe you've seen the films at least, whatever the case, back in the late 70's is when I was given the books by an older brother and got completely lost in them, this then, is how I envisioned Gandalf at that time, in the films, as great as they are, still did not live up to my own vision of what people looked like. But it's always that way isn't it.
I recall the first time we learned how to use scratch board art was around the fifth grade, at that time, the teacher, I think it was Mrs. Geddes, she had the class cover a piece of paper with many colours of crayon, then we would scratch in a drawing, you get interesting images, depending on how many different colours you used. This drawing, I did back in 1985, for this now you can purchase an already prepared black card, you just then start scratching.

People who have pissed me off
Over on the north shore, there is a local paper that's been published for years, there was this fellow who had his own column and of course you are allowed to have your own opinion, it's a free country, but this guy was so opinionated and biggotted of any creed, belief, or race that was not his own, that he would get the stew up to a raging boil, people just loved this krap, I worked out this image, it's not a swastica on his arm, but the backwards one from Japan, which has an entirely different meaning. And that's not exactly a KKK clan hood he's holding in his cloven hoof, it's a dust rag * yeah, that's it, that's the ticket. I printed off a multitude of these and was going to post them on every poll down Lonsdale, well I never did get around to doing that, and now the sad guy is dead.
I worked for 16.5 years at the University of B.C. bookstore, and whenever someones birthday was coming up, I would be asked to draw their picture, here is Kathy who originally came from Victoria on Vancouver island, nice place Victoria, I tried making the image seem Victoria-like, what with the pond and swan. This is an earlier portrait, when people used to sign the artwork, a few down the road, they would sign a seperate card, and preserve my work.

Soul Release
Soap Stone Carving, can't really call this a graphic, but thought I'd add it here just to mix things up a bit.
