We got a taxi at the bottom to Coki Beach which was $9. @ and Bob gave him $20. They drive on the left instead of the right. We really wanted to go to Coral World, but Coki Beach was about the same place. He took us over Donkey Hill and there was a bad word which had been spray painted out after Donkey. As we walked up to Coral World, one of the other taxi drivers gave us some coupons for $4 off each adult admission. So we paid $14 @ instead of $18. We got an orange arm band. She tried to put it on my left arm, but it wasn't long enough to go over my watch. |
Coral World had been wiped out by Hurricane Marilyn in 1995, and when we were here last in 1997 it had not yet been rebuilt. It was quite an interesting place. We saw quite a lot of iguanas running around loose. There was also a shark pool, a touching area with starfish etc., a sea turtle area, and a stingray pool. |
There was an underwater observatory which had a predator tank and another level with other fish such as black bar soldier fish, puffer, barracuda (top), trumpet fish, and various angelfish plus coral. Outside there was a helmet dive which you could do for $50 - we didn't do it. |
They also had a separate Caribbean Reef area with an 80,000 gallon tank, and several smaller tanks with seahorses, bluehead wrasses, yellowhead jawfishes, morey eels, lobster, coral shrimp, and toadfish, including some under black lights. They also had some Bahama Ducks. |
| Coki Beach from Coral World |
Originally I had been going to swim at Coki Beach, but it was about 12:30 by now, and I didn't feel like eating at Coral World, so we got a cab back to the ship - |
| Wire thick with pigeons (rock doves) |
When we saw a congregation of pigeons, the driver told me that the Spanish for pigeon was paloma. The cab ride cost $18 again and Bob gave her $20. So the whole trip cost $34 each, instead of the $39 each it would have cost on the ship's tour. |
| Towel made into a lobster |
We got back to the ship about 1, and found that our cabin steward had made a lobster out of towels on the bed. For dinner I had Grapefruit and Avocado appetizer, Lentil Soup and Beef Stroganoff which strangely enough had shoestring potatoes instead of noodles. I had profiteroles for dessert. I could NOT send any emails after St. Thomas. The internet cafe guy couldn't figure out why this would be so (I hadn't changed anything), and neither could a computer guy who was hanging around there. The computer guy tried to explain to me that I absolutely could not send emails the way that I had been doing it. Also I talked to him and his parents until late, so I didn't get to bed until about midnight. I finally sent the email above from the internet website. (which means copying everything over to a new location) Tomorrow we will be in Sint Maarten |
