The old cemetery

The SCHEIBLER'S MAUSOLEUM from 1888, Stary Cmentarz (the Old Cemetery), Ogrodowa Street.

Those who raised huge factories contributed to the construction of sacral buildings as well. They were mainly of German Evangelical-Augsburg origin, e.g. L. Geyer, T. Grohman, K. Scheibler, D. Lande (but not only, I. K. Poznanski, J. Heinzel and others). They were called 'lodzermensz', it was them and Lodz of that time which were portrayed by Wladyslaw Reymont in Ziemia Obiecana (The Promised Land). They are buried in the splendid family tombs in the oldest cemetery in Lodz in Ogrodowa Street. The Scheiblers' mausoleum is the most famous one in the Evangelical part of this cemetery.

Very good and informative page on Lodz. The word Necropolis is not used for Jewsih Cemetaries though. The entire jewish population during the Holocaust were shipped off to Auschwitz.

Janina - you do Lodz proud! You're right - it is underrated as a tourist destination. Birthday greetings from Alaska!
