The SCHEIBLER'S MAUSOLEUM from 1888, Stary Cmentarz (the Old Cemetery), Ogrodowa Street.
Those who raised huge factories contributed to the construction of sacral buildings as well. They were mainly of German Evangelical-Augsburg origin, e.g. L. Geyer, T. Grohman, K. Scheibler, D. Lande (but not only, I. K. Poznanski, J. Heinzel and others). They were called 'lodzermensz', it was them and Lodz of that time which were portrayed by Wladyslaw Reymont in Ziemia Obiecana (The Promised Land). They are buried in the splendid family tombs in the oldest cemetery in Lodz in Ogrodowa Street. The Scheiblers' mausoleum is the most famous one in the Evangelical part of this cemetery. |

Airpunk Sun Jun 8, 2008 09:05 UTC Thanks for your great Lodz page. Maybe I'll be there next week and use some of your tips to find my way through the city. Greetings from northern Germany - Karl | johncudw Thu Apr 24, 2008 12:37 UTC Hi Janina, nice to see your photos and pages on Lodz. Greetings from John and Gail in NJ, USA | roamer61 Thu Mar 15, 2007 15:10 UTC Very good and informative page on Lodz. The word Necropolis is not used for Jewsih Cemetaries though. The entire jewish population during the Holocaust were shipped off to Auschwitz. | RickinDutch Tue Jun 27, 2006 18:13 UTC Janina - you do Lodz proud! You're right - it is underrated as a tourist destination. Birthday greetings from Alaska! |
