MANHATTAN Typical Cold Water Walk Up

This is an old building anywhere in NYC. It generally does not have an elevator and in the old days it did not have a bathroom, or the bathroom (that is one with shower or bathtub plus toilet) was in the kitchen. I looked at one of these on the Upper East Side when I first moved to New York. It reminded me of a scene from an old movie. You entered through the kitchen, floors were lenolium, shower stall was on the left of the stove and toilet stall was on the right. As you passed the shower stall you entered into another room which was very small. This was the bedroom living area. The asking rent 12 years ago was $900. As I left the building there was a man sitting on the stoop. He asked me if I were thinking about renting there. I said probably not. Then he told me that he had lived there for years and years and his rent was $200.
