Marking is supposed to be the bane of any teacher's life and, since I teach the same thing (key skills) to seventeen classes of twenty beauty therapy students each year, I can find marking the same things again and again a bit dull but often it's livened up a little by some of the entertaining things they write or type (many of them seem to come about by letting the spell check change any errors without checking what it's changing them to) by accident. I tend to do my marking on the train home to make best use of this time and often have to try hard not to giggle out loud!
The key skills qualification that I teach aims to ensure people know how to use computers, whilst improving their literacy and numeracy skills, in the context of their chosen career. It is aimed at young people (16-19) studying for practical qualifications, such as hair and beauty, catering and construction, who have not achieved a good level of the skills required by employers during their schooling, as this often prevents them from getting a job. Of course they all think they have escaped these subjects by leaving school and are not pleased to realise that they have to continue their studies. I also provide learning support for people on further education courses who have English as their second language or are dyslexic. This helps to make sure that the written part of the course is achievable for them. I enjoy this side of my job much more, as the people are usually happy to come and get help. |
| | Project on Hygiene and Safety in the Salon: > I would probably notice if my client had conjunctivitis when I do the consultation because her eyes would be glued shut >We should keep our manicure tools hygienic by sticking them regularly into the matricide (Barbicide is the brand name of a disinfectant used in the hair and beauty industry) > If a client is injured in the salon, depending on how serious it is, I would call the ambulance or a first aider and, while I was waiting, I would fill in the accident book and ask the client to sing >If a client has conjunctivitis I would be able to see a little puss in her eye > If I thought my client had a contagious skin disease, I would defiantly (definitely) tell her to go to the doctor, as I am not qualified to treat her |
Project on Designing a Salon: >Because the clients spend a lot of money on products, I shall invest in a display shelf, so I can link sell products with threats (treatments) >I have decided to buy an electric chair to help me deal with shorter clients > Most of the clients chose light colours, so I will defiantly (definitely ) paint the salon lilac > If the client is wearing waterproof mascara, I will need to use a special kind of eye remover > I chose this manicure table because it comes with a small bowel the client can put her hand in > I decided to use this water resistant wooden flooring in case of any pillage >In the survey, I asked whether the clients would prefer the room to be scented by perfumed candles, aromatherapy oils or insaneness sticks | | | Equipment for a Manicure or Pedicure |

| | Leaflet to Help Clients Care for Their Nails >Wash your hands using a mild soup as harsh ones can dry out your nails >Chemicals such as wishing powder can have a bad effect on the nails >Wear robber gloves to avoid ruining your nails > Using nail vanish can harm your nails |
If I haven't scared you off entirely... I should let you know that my lovely students do treatments on the public, when they are ready to be assessed, at much cheaper rates than the salons nearby, so if you're in the Oxford Circus area, in need of some pampering and don't have a little puss in your eye, why not drop in to see them! | | |
