| Page Views: 215 Last Visit to Widecombe in the Moor: September, 2005 I Used To Live Here | Widecombe Fair by johngayton - last update: Sep 14, 2005 |
In days of old the village fair wasn't so much a commercial event, more of a "I have three daughters........and how many sons have you got?" sort of gathering. OK, a certain amount of trading took place, but horses, sheep and cattle were sold at local markets all the time, and so the annual village fairs weren't so much about local trade - more about diversifying the gene pool!!
And that is exactly what the village fairs were!
"And how many acres have you got?"
"A few"
"And you?"
"A few."
"Where to?"
"Just off Newton...........has your boy Sam met my Becky?"
"She's a sturdy lass, good with the horses."
"My Sam, he's a worker..........does the milking six days, but always at chapel for early mass on Sundays."
DEAL DONE!!!! |
| | Modern Commerce With the advent of the infernal combusting engine the fair has perhaps lost the original plot..............but is still interesting! |
Characters This is a guy who shoots animals .............. the same way that I do ........through the camera lens!
| | crafty continued............ Ignore "Frogs" though might put better pic here eventually LOL |
One of the animals I shot! Not taken on Fair Day, but example ...............sample ............... posing for camera on green, beauty!
| | Back to commerce Dave and Evie, lovely people - share a surname but aren't related. It is the people who make a place :) |
Evening At the end of the fair day we have a party, in the beer tent, on the field.
We've all worked bloody hard so now is time to enjoy!
| | Party And the day is far from finished!
update- i'm gonna do another one just like this! sorry guys, pure self indulgence!!!! Cheers All, John. |

Had a great stop in the youth hostel in the Dartmoor. Still a highlight in my mind after many trips afterwards... Take care, Christian. |
