Exploring The Blue Planet

***** HOW DID IT ALL HAPPEN? *****

I mean, how did I get bitten by the travel bug? Maybe it is in the genes. My folks and my siblings all love to travel. Since young, dad loves to bring us, the kids, on road trips. The most memorable one was when dad brought all of us in his comfortable passenger van from Johor Bahru, South of Peninsula Malaysia right up to Koh Samui in Thailand.

As for mum, although she is not very much a good navigator, she is a good cook. When the family went on road trips, self-catered accommodation is what she always look for. And we can savour on home-cooked mum's cuisine.

I can still remember those days when I was really little, being Penang-born, we used to travel from Johor Bahru to and fro Penang so often that we lost count. I guess I was lucky as a little girl to travel so often on the Forkers and Boeings. Somehow, I just enjoyed it, the travelling (not buying chocolates and toys in the airport), very much.

Even for short trips and picnics out of Johor Bahru. Very often, we hit out to Kota Tinggi and Desaru for picnics with my family. Another thing which we love doing... being photographed (that was when I was a kid). My love for photography, I believe, is in the genes too. Mum was her school photography club member and she used to own an old Canon camera and I remembered those days when she would get us to pose for her camera when we were out travelling.

However, things change a bit now that I am a big big girl, who is still exploring my big big world.

***** EVOLUTION *****

Currently, I still enjoy family trips but many a times, this may not be possible due to different schedules of my siblings and my folks. So, what is the current mode and type of travel I enjoy (besides virtually)?

#1. Family Trips
#2. Road Trips
#3. Backpacking Trips
#4. Diving Trips
#5. Ecotourism
#6. Adventure and Sports Travel

Maybe I shall elaborate on Backpacking and when and why I started doing that.

Once upon a time when I was 12 or younger, my eldest brother went on a backpacking trip to Europe. He was there for more than a month. He survived Europe with his limited cash and language. I still remembered his backpack. 2 aluminium poles attached to the side to make the bag sturdy. That time, he was, among his friends and family, the first one who backpacked to Europe alone.

When he returned, I was in awe when I saw those photos. I suddenly felt that the world is so so so big and I wished I could do the same, learning as I travel. About the different cultures and different people, etc. I told myself I want to backpack too. He! This finally materialised when I was 19 years old. I went to Europe too! Yahoo!!! It was a great experience. It was a crazy trip, covering so many cities and countries.

After that "signature" backpacking trip, I did more of such. Longer ones which I can remember are my China Silk Route trip, Northern India, Malaysia and Thailand overland, various trips back to Europe...

Street Food Vendor, Bangkok, Thailand

***** CONTINUING *****

Family road trips. Still very much part of me. But now, dad doesn't drive anymore. These days, we drive him. He doesn't navigate too; we do that job too. He! He!

The most recent long family and road trip was our trip to Scotland and Italy. Italy was more like a backpacking trip with the folks and Scotland was a real road trip whereby we rented a car, dumped everything in the boot, lived in caravan, cooked at self-catered accommodation, stopped as and when we like.

Recently, I do not know why but I enjoy adventure travel too. Perhaps age is catching up and I want to do more adventurous stuffs before I cannot do it anymore. I am lucky in a way, that I have a bunch of like-minded friends who enjoy doing the same thing. When I go on trips, I like to do stuffs like water-rafting, kayaking, diving, hiking, trekking, camping, etc.

Viewing Singapore from The Esplanade

***** LAST BUT NOT LEAST *****

I am preparing for my solo trip to South America. The thought of going there alone was quite scary initially but I figured that so many did that and all enjoyed themselves very much.

So, I am on my way ...
