Key West, Florida 2005

by Georgiantraveler - last update: Aug 1, 2005

All aboard!

The journey...

When traveling to Key West, I would definitely recommend this mode of travel if you can get it. In this case, our vehicle of choice is a Beechcraft King Air C90, owned by my Father-in-Law. Good work if you can find it!

Not a bad way to view the Shuttle launch, either!

On this day we were fortunate to find that the Shuttle Discovery was launching just as we would be at 15,000 feet. I've been closer, but I've never viewed one without the crowds before.
The Point

Glorious Key West!

This is the famous Southernmost point in the US, which is next door to the Southernmost southernmost house (which is actually two doors down from "The Southernmost house", go figure)
A performance begins.

Mallory Square

The sunset celebration on Mallory Square is the one event everyone on Key West agrees on. While awaiting the last view of the sun, various acts perform for your amusement. These include escape artists, sword swallowers, fire eaters, the dog show, and the cat show. All are excellent performances, and are worthy of a few dollars contribution.
Hemingway House

The Hemingway House

The second highest point on Key West, this house is known for being the where Ernest Hemingway lived the longest, the location of the first swimming pool in Key West (hand chiseled in coral, it cost three times the amount of the house), and for the large collection of six-toed cats.
Charlie Chaplin

Hemingway cats

Often referred to as "Hemingway cats", the majority of these cats are direct offpring of those owned by Ernest. These "six-toed" cats were believed to be good luck, the reputation being handed down from an old sailor's superstition.
The original Sloppy Joes Bar

Famous Landmarks

Captain Tony's is the original site of "Sloppy Joes" Bar, where Ernest Hemingway spent many evenings drinking with the locals.
Hey, big boy!

...and never ending nightlife!

You will find all kinds of party people in Key West!
