Horse Guards over Dun Aengus | British Horse Guards over Dun Aengus |
Although you may not believe it, this juxtaposition of photos is not a political statement of British imperialism over Irish history - it was just an accident that this roll of film was double exposed by two different photographers several months apart.
The upright photo is of the Horse Guards in front of Buckingham Palace in London. The upside down photo is of the prehistoric fortress of Dun Aengus on the island of Inishmore off the west coast of Ireland.
Totally accidental - yet quite ironic... |
| | Dun Aengus and Chartres The upright photo is a close up of the rock walls that make up the prehistoric fortress of Dun Aengus. The upside photo is of a Gothic church, possibly at Chartres, but I suppose it could be the facade of Notre Dame in Paris.
Does anyone recognize it? |
Pagan Ireland as seen through the Catholic Church The upright photo is of Dun Aengus, looking across the walls to the landscape (and cliffs) beyond.
However, the other photo at right angles is of the silhouette of a Catholic church. The sky in this second photo has washed out the first photo, so that you can only see Dun Aengus in the shadow or silhouette of the church.
Serendipity... | | | Dun Aengus and a Catholic church |

| Dun Aengus and the Tower Bridge |
| | Dun Aengus and the Tower Bridge The upright photo here is of the Tower Bridge in London. Superimposed over the bridge is an upsidedown photo of the rock walls of Dun Aengus. |
Cliffs on Inishmore and Big Ben The upright photo is of the cliffs on the western side of Inishmore, west of Ireland. Next stop: North America!
The photo at a 90 degree rotation is of Big Ben, the clock that stands over the Houses of Parliament in London. | | | Cliffs on Inishmore and Big Ben |

| Celtic tomb and English silhouette |
| | Celtic tomb is brighter than English silhouette Here is a reverse - the Celtic photo is much more prominent than the English overlay. This is a photo of a funerary monument on Inishmore. Superimposed is the silhouette of a building, but the silhouette is so dim that I can't make out what it is.
One for Ireland(!) |
Sunset at Dun Aengus This is the view of sunset over the Atlantic on New Year's Day from Dun Aengus. The sunset has all but wiped out the superimposed photo, which is visible only as a pair of light streaks at the bottom converging towards the sun...
I hope you have enjoyed these photos! | | |
