In 1976/77, a student of mine sold me some film. Unfortunately, she had exposed the film on a trip to Chartres and had failed to fully rewind the film, leaving a tongue that made us think that the film was unexposed.
I made a trip through northern Europe over the Christmas holidays of 76/77. I shot film of Berlin, Scandinavia, and Ireland during this time. This lead to a roll of film in which all the photos consisted of superimposed images, some of them with interesting artistic implications.
This photo combines a photo of one of the walls around Berlin in the Communist era from a moving train, with some stained glass from the cathedral at Chartres at a 90 degree angle. |
| | More Berlin Wall/Chartres This is a second photo of a wall around Berlin (not the real "Wall" but part of the enclosures outside of Berlin) superimposed with stained glass windows from the cathedral at Chartres. |
Bombed out church and painting This photo is of the one church in Berlin that has been left in its ruined state from the war as a symbol, superimposed with a Renaissance painting (as best I can tell) that you can see only in the image of the church itself. | | |
| Church in snow/stained glass from Chartres |
| | Church in snow I believe that this church in snow was in Germany. The country-looking environment contrasts with the stained glass that I assume is from the back wall of the cathedral at Chartres. Actually, I have never been to Chartres; I just have to take the word of the student who sold me the film that that's where she was... |
Church and Pub The upright picture is the exterior of a large Gothic(?) church, possibly at Chartres. At 90 degrees rotation is a street scene of an Irish town, probably Galway. The visible building probably has a pub on the first floor. | | | Formal cathedral and small Irish town |

| Cliffs on Inishmore with mysterious overlay |
| | Spooky cliffs The photo here is of the cliffs of the island Inishmore in Ireland, taken from the prehistoric fort, Dun Aengus. I can't tell what the overlay photo was, except that there appear to be windows on the lower left corner... |
Orvieto and the Vatican The upright photo here appears to be the duomo (cathedral) in Orvieto, a delightful Etruscan hilltown north of Rome. The duomo has stunning mosaics on the front that glisten in the setting sun (the facade faces west).
Upside and superimposed is a photo of the basilica of St. Peter's in Rome, taken from the piazza in front. | | | the duomo in Orvieto and St. Peter's basilica |

| the duomo in Orvieto/the Via della Conciliazione |
| | Orvieto and the Vatican - 2 The upright photo appears to be the duomo at Orvieto.
The landscape (at right angles) is a photo of the Via della Conciliazione, the street that Mussolini built in front of the Vatican, leading from Castel Sant'Angelo to St. Peter's basilica. |
