The Making of a Doughnut (Krispy Kreme, that is)

by rexvaughan - last update: Jul 21, 2005

The "rising chamber"

Rise up doughnuts of the world!
I know this is a strange travelogue, but maybe someone else will be as fascinated as I am with the machine that automatically spits out tasty Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. In the photo, they call it something else, but this is the temp and humidity controlled chamber in which the doughnuts rise. You can see them on their little swing seats and the process is timed so they rise just the right amount.
The flipping operation
The doughnuts are dropped from the belt into the vat of hot oil on the right. Somehow their passage to the left is timed so that when they get to the "flipper" in the middle of the photo they are perfectly cooked on one side. Then they are flipped and sent on their way.
Leaving the flipper, the doughnuts go along on rollers so that excess oil drops off and they cool slightly before being given a shower of frosting.
YUM!
End of the line
This is the whole line viewed from the end where they proceed on the conveyor for boxing or to be picked off singly for drooling customers like me.

Now wasn't that educational???

Hi Rex! Love your Atlanta page. Gone with the wind was my girlhood favourite! Odd to see aboriginal art here! Tracey

How can anything be "overly" patriotic? We need to be very and even "overly" patriotic about the country that, although it is far from perfect, is the one country that has given freedom and opportunity to more of its citizens than any other country.
