Trans Siberian Railway 2003 PART I

by jeoren - last update: Jul 25, 2005

Transfer to Moscow

In the summer of 2003, a friend of mine and myself planned a trip to Russia. Fond of travelling by train, we decided to make a journey with the Trans Siberian Railroad, the longest trainjourney in the world. Here you find a report of our experiences!

At first, we wanted to go to Moscow by bus. But because of the fact that would last 48 hours and besides we should need a transit-visa for the Belarus, we decided to go by airplane.

Arrival in Moscow

After a flight of several hours, we landed at the international airport of Moscow, Sheremetyevo II.
This airport was built for the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980.
From the airport, we ignored the taxi-drivers and took a bus to the nearest metrostation in Moscow. (Rechnoy Vokzal). The smell of petrol on the highway was horrible. Staying in Moscow is absolutely bad for you health.

Metro

From Rechnoy Vokzal, we took the metro to Izmailovsky Park, the metrostation next to our hotel. We would sleep only one day in the hotel, because the following day we took the Trans Siberian Train, to Vladivostok.

Hotel

This is a picture of the huge hotel we stayed in. The colours on the building refer to the Olympic Games.

We slept at the 30th floor of the most right standing hotelbuilding.

In the leftcorner of the picture you see metrostation Izmailovsky Park (the building with the light-yellow walls)
After employing our hotelroom, we went to Tverskaya Ulitsa, to eat something at Mc Donalds.
It was the first Mc Donalds of Moscow, opened in 1990.
Walking along Tverskaya Ulitsa, you finally reach Red Square. On the picture you see the Historical Museum. Red Square itself was closed this summer, because of recent attacks of the Chechens.
Next to Red Square, there is a park called Alexander Gardens. With a nice view at the Kremlin, a lot of people populate this park, drinking beer and stroll around.
