I went to up state New York in Jan 1999 when I worked in Philips Electronics Taiwan. We had a coporated factory there. At the weekend, my colleague lived in NYC drove me to Holliday Inn in China Town. Then I started my two-day trip in NYC. It felt that I was back to my home walking in Chinatown there. I tried the Taiwanese food there as the dinner. It tasted similar but more salty.
At the early morning on Saturday, I left the hotel and walked along the Broadway to the Ferry terminal. I walked through the famous Wall Street on the way, but it is so quiet at the weekend morning. It is hard to imagine what you had seen in the movie before. I arrived the ferry terminal soon. It was too early for me to take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty so that I took a rest at the terminal for the Staten Island ferry. I was very suprised when I went in the restroom in the terminal. There were so many people there but it seemed that nobody did what the nomorl people would do in the restroom. There were no door for the toilet. The facilities in the rstroom were almost broken. What a suprise it was!
After a while I went to take the ferry to the statue of liberty and Ellis Island. There is a long staircase that leads to the crown of the statue of the liberty. It sounded lot of funs to get there. In fact, it was not. The staircase is very narrow and it would took very long time to wait in line. You can only see the ass of the travller in front of you. After you reached the top, you did see the skyline of lower Manhatten from the windows at the crown, but you can easily get such a view from many places.
Leaving the statue of the liberty, I went to the museum at the Ellis Island. Ellis Island was the entrance for the foreigner to settle to the states. It is very hard to imagine that such a small island played such a role.
Leaving the ferry from Ellis Island, I went through the battery park to the world financial center. There is an interesting winter garden at the world financial center. They planted the coconuts in the hosue.
Then I walked back to Broadway and went to visit the shops in Soho area. There were many unique shops in Soho. I stayed there till the evening. I bought some food at a shop called Dean and Deluca on the way back to the hotel. It was a very interesting food stand. You can almost find any food here.
I didn't go out at Saturday night. My collegue pick me up next early morning. He put me down near the Madison Garden Square. I went to the Empire State building first. I have ever been to John Hancock in Chicago. It seems not so interesting to have a view at the Empire State building. By the way I could not go to the top of the building at the weekend by the elavator. The elavator seemed to go to 116 floors only. If you would like to go up, you must walk. After walking so much on Saturday, I gave up the idea to the top of the building.
Leaving the Empire state building, I went to the famous Fifth Anv. At noon I came back and went to the ticket booth at the Broadway to buy the ticket with discount. I bought the ticket for a bad seat at the side but the worker in the theater asked me to move to the center of the first row. They were so nice to me so that I could enjoy a great show that afternoon.
My New York trip ended with the Broadway show. I've ever been to Los Angles, Chicago and New York. I felt that the trip to New York is the most bored. Maybe it is because that was my third time to the states and there was few things new to me. Maybe it was a business trip alone. Anyway I could not feel the charming side of this big city.
If I could choose the cities to visit in the states next time, I may choose San Fransisco or New Orlean. Maybe I could see something different there.
