My Pet Frogs.

by Purpleshade - last update: Oct 21, 2005

Proud winners of 'Pet of the week' competition

Motorbike frogs on the Christmas decorations.
Motor-bike frog
Frogs around Perth are diminishing in numbers because their natural habitat is being used up for houses. So we made our garden frog friendly, dozens of them have come.
We followed the advice from Alcoa Frogwatch in conjuction with Murdock University.

A frog on a frog
The frogs pictured here are Motorbike frogs, so called because they make a noise like a little scrambler motorbike.

They're a bit bit silly and sometimes fall into the swimming pool. We fish them out, they don't seem to mind.
Another frog by the pond.
This year we had hundreds of tadpoles in our pond and fed them with frozen spinach and fish food.

On sunny days they come out to bask in the sun. Earlier in the year they sit up under the pergola roof.
A frog on the other side of the pond
Their colour varies and can change a little according to their surroundings, usually shades of green and yellow with striped markings. No two are the same.
Frogs in the bird feeder
They are tree frogs and can climb, they like it on the pergola by the mozzie zapper where they can catch lots of insects.

They can travel quite a distance accross land. They often go walkabout, especially after rain.
Frogs on the mozzie zapper.
Somtimes they actually sit ON the mozzie zapper.

We often watch them come out of their hideyholes in the ground cover in the evening and climb up the pergola poles.
Baby moaning frog
This is a baby moaning frog, we fish them out of the pool all the time. Last year we had moaning frogs in the garden for the first time. At first we thought their little wails were cute, but when they get going they are just too loud. So now whenever we find them we take them to the creek just ouside our back wall.

Well we are back in Dublin at same hotel and I must say "The Royal Lampshade "is just out of hand with all the beautiful mirrors and chandeliers and keeps wanting to be photographed which is a bit over the top as The shade is really a stow a way!

Your frog page is just superb Lesley. Loved the idea of relocating moaning frogs for a bit of peace and the idea of frogs in your bird feeder - identity crisis? Terrific stuff. Mike
