650 Bald Eagles here full time What makes them so unique out here is that they nest on the ground since we have no trees. So all along the hills you'll see nesting pairs in May and June.
Here is a mature bald eagle eating and guarding her fish head on a bird house at Front Beach. Patty was cleaning her subistance catch and there were about 50 of these guys giving meaning to the term "pecking order" as they manuvered for the best spot. |
| | Remnants of WWII Everywhere All along the coast can be found signs of the huge military build up that occured here during during WWII. Bunkers, tunnels, pill boxes, buildings, and gun mounts like those seen in this photo are everywhere. Unalaska was the only US soil bombed by the Japanese other than Hawaii during WWII. June 3 and 4th, 1942, over 70 soldiers and sailors were killed as the Japanese began their invasion of the Aleutians. "The Thousand Mile War" is a relatively unknown theater of operations, but the battle to retake Attu in 1943 was the second bloodiest battle in the Pacific theater. |
#1 Fishing Port in North America For 13 years running, more fish has been offloaded for processing here than anywhere else in North America. These are factory trawlers, fishing vessels that process their fish onboard and then discharge their frozen cargo here for shipment all over the world. If you have ever had a fish burger at McDonalds or Burger King, chances are it came from here. | | | Offshore Processors Offloading Pollock |

| | Wildflowers Cover the Hills During the summer, our hills are covered with all types of wild flowers and tunda. With the soft tundra, no bears and NO BUGS, the hills around Unalaska make for great hiking. |
Aleutian Geese Once almost extinct, we now see over a 1,000 of these large geese visiting each year both on their way north to the arctic and then on their way back south.
| | View from Bunker Hill I like the contrasts in this photo. A Bunker from WWII on the right, the largest fish processing plant - Unisea- in foreground and Mt. Ballyhoo in the distance. |
The Berries are Ready! On a hike up Bunker Hill today, we saw that the first batch of salmon berries are ready to eat or to make preserves! And the blue berries look like they will be ready early as well. Who needs to buy lunch?
| | The Pinks Are In! 3 visiting anglers are quickly catching their limit of pink salmon. Photo taken yesterday, 8/4/05, at Humpy Cove, about a 6 mile drive from downtown Unalaska. Hadn't seen this done with fly fishing gear before. They usually don't bite on traditional spinning gear and most folks just snag them, but these guys were catching them easily. |
