NYC Restaurants

by Pinoy - last update: Jun 3, 2004

Dining out in NYC is like an adventure. There are so many fine restaurants to choose from. It is really jungle out there. Therefore, to make your life easier and fulfilling, I set up a list of restaurant tips coming from restaurant-goers just like myself.
There are certain basics that everyone has the right to expect when dining out: informative service, sanitary facilities, healthful food, timely honoring of reservations and smoke-free seating.
If these conditions are not met, many of us simply swallow our disappointments, assuming there is nothing we can do about it. As a matter of fact, we have far more power than they may realize. Keep in mind, happy clients equal a successful business.
If dissatisfied by any aspect of your experience, from handling of your reservations to the food or service, tell the manager. Problems are easy to solve at the time they occur, rather if management does not know about them until afterwards.
If you have specific dietary requests, for instance, you wish to bring your own wine, or any special needs, you can avoid disappointment by calling ahead.
A restaurant has the ability to honor reservations. However, if you are showing up late or not showing up at all, make a point to cancel your reservations.
Most New Yorkers tip 15% to 19%, and often 20% or more at high-end restaurants. And you have the right not to tip at all if unhappy with the service. But in most cases, you may simply leave 10% to get the message across and not to come back.
If you expressed your complaints to the restaurant management, but you have not gotten a satisfactory response, you may write to a restaurant critic (check out local newspapers) detailing the problem. Ascertain you have a copy of your restaurant receipt. This really gets the restaurant’s attention.
So have fun and enjoy your dining in New York City restaurants.
