MARBELLA

by venteeocho - last update: Apr 14, 2006

The Spanish Costa del Sol has long been known to have the best climate in Europe with 320 days of sun per year and temperatures ranging from 16 to 30 degrees Celsius (61 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit) all year.

Sierra de las Nieves, the mountain chain surrounding the Marbella area, is the reason for the good weather, a unique micro climate since the rain and cold winds from the Atlantic Ocean is pushed further up the coast to the Costa Blanca area.

The average temperature is 19º C (66 ºF) and the sun shines for 320 days a year with fewer than 50 days of rain. First rains are late September or early October, can be heavy rarely last more than a day or two. This rain benefits the varied and luscious vegetation. Daily highs about 20º C (68º F) and nightly lows rarely much below 10º C (50º F). Pullover in the day, jacket in the evening.

Sunbathing almost every day from June to September. Virtually no rain. Daily highs about 35º C (95º F) and nightly lows 15º C (59º F). Shirt sleeve weather all the time evenings included.
Marbella was called Salduba in the time of the Romans and re-named Marbil-la under the Muslim rule, and walking through the Historical District is like taking a small trip through the past, where the Arab roots and traces of Christianity come together. For example, the Iglesia de la Encarnación (Church of the Incarnation) was raised just a few metres from the Murallas (walls) of the Caliph's castle.

The streets wind through cobblestones, immaculate façades, and balconies decorated with flowerboxes full of geraniums and carnations. There are priceless tiny, typically-Andalusian squares and nooks and crannies, such as the Balcón de la Virgen (Balcony of the Virgin Mary), set in the window of an old white-washed house that today houses a restaurant
Just 12 miles across the sea from North Africa, surrounded by the Sierra Blanca mountain range, this flourishing seaside heaven, enjoys a “micro-climate” with an annual average temperature of 21° C, 320 days of sunshine a year and less than 45 days of rain. No wonder Marbella is considered a dream destination worldwide.
Puerto Banus near Marbella is the best place for beaches and fun. Great atmosphere in the day and night. .Drinks in the evenings by the marina are a must!
