Cliff Island looking out to Jewell Island | Rocky Coast of Cliff Is. w. Jewell Is in Backgroud |
I was born and raised in Maine, Waterville to be exact. I left it in 1971 newly married and wisked away to my husband Carl's home state of New York.
But when you have lived in Maine, you can never really leave it. So tradionally every year in the summer time we go back and find refuge on an isolated island called "Cliff", one of the many "Calendar islands" in the Casco Bay.
It is there that we leave everything behind....and only think about sleeping, eating, reading, fishing, walking, collecting seaglass, walking the dog, watching the "Scotia Prince" Ocean Liner slide by on the horizon from Portland to Nova Scotia in the evening, our clue that it is time to go to bed.
Going to Maine in the summer has been a family tradition, and hopefully one that will be passed down from generation to generation.
My parents gave me a love for the coast of Maine and also it's beautiful and many lakes. A simple gift to treasure. |
| Beach on Cliff Is. Maine in the Fog |
| | A Family Tradition from Generation to Generation. This is a beach (Coyne) on Cliff Island that you walk on to get to the Bluffs, were the surf is wild against the rocks.
It is also where we like to fish for Striped Bass.

| | Our cottage from rocks and inlet bay. Three sided porch with deck on back, out on a point overlooking Fisherman's Bay, Jewel Island, and the open Atlantic Ocean.
Across is my favorite, Ireland. Ironic that one piece of water touches both of my favorite places on earth across the sea.

| View from our Porch, Cliff Is., Maine |
| | View from the Porch, Cliff Is. Maine No Television, video games, traffic, lots of people, etc. Just the fresh air, ocean, wind, rocks and sun...and a bit of fog too.
Sitting on the porch is all I need, this is where we have late afternnoon cocktails and appetizers. It's hard to pull oneself up to start up the grill for dinner, which is usually "surf and turf". Lobsters, Striped Bass and Steak or Burgers.

| Ferry on Casco Bay, Maine |
| | Caso Bay Ferry, Maine Son and grandson coming out to the island in the Casco Bay of the coastline of Maine, for a visit. Going to see Nana and Poppa.

| Storm Coming..Lobster Boats..Maine |
| | Storm Coming Up....Lobster Boats on Moorings. Fishing is a way of life on the islands, the lobster fisherman has his peak in the summer months.
Lobster Boats on their moorings in early evening.

| | Men folk Going Fishing to the Bluffs. Fishing, reading, walking, snoozing in the hamock on the porch overlooking the sea.....pretty much sums up our summers on our island.
Also, having great feasts of Lobsters and fresh caught Striped Bass for supper, cooked on the grill, in a chowder, or baked, boiled or fried.
Life can really be this simple....for awhile anyway.

| Rocky Coastline of Maine. Cliff Island. |
| | Lunch break..while fishing..on rocks. The coastline of Maine, is the rockiest I believe in the world.
A place of intrique with many stories told of shipwrecks, and sea faring, sailing, lobster fishing, etc.
Once Maine is in your blood it is like an addiction. There is a "feeling" you can't describ when you are on the water.
I got my love of the "sea" from my father, and hopefully my children have got it from me, their children I guarantee will have it also.
