Ottawa Land Marks

by bkathryn - last update: Jun 28, 2007

Canada has a new World Heritage Site!

It's the Rideau Canal!

This picture was taken at the Ottawa River end of the canal (by the Chateau Laurier and the Museum of Photography) on Canada Day (July 1) 2002.
East Block, House of Commons
So the most obvious one in the House of Commons. Here's a picture of the East Block with the crocuses out in April 1989.
House of Commons Library
This is a view of the Library of the House of Commons. This is the original Library, from before the fire in the early 1900s, which destroyed the rest of the House of Commons. This picture was taken in April 1989.
Canada's National Art Gallery, Ottawa
And this is the National Art Gallery. It's convenient walking distance from the House of Commons, as well as to the museum of Civilization. As of a few weeks ago, there is now a rather large and artistic spider in fron of the Gallery.
Canada'a Museum of Civilization, Ottawa
And this is Canada's National Museum of Civilization. It's across the Ottawa River, in Gatineau (formerly Hull), Quebec. The architect of the building was Douglas Cardinal. It's made of limestone from central Canada (Manitoba, I think) and it's fabulous!
Chateau Laurier
And the centre front building is the Chateau Laurier. It has a match in Quebec City, in the Chateau Frontenac. They are both part of the same hotel chain, now the Fairmont chain. Though I've never stayed there, I have had various meals and I can imagine it would be wonderful! The low building to the right of the Chateau is the old train station, now the Government Conference Centre.
Canada's House of Commons
And here's another picture of the House of Commons and its Library. This one was taken from Astrolabe Theatre, which is up behing the National Art Gallery. They sometimes have live music there.
