The Alkmaar Cheese Market

by Robin922 - last update: May 28, 2005

While the process of cheese marketing has changed, the people of Alkmaar invite people to come to come into their town and view the historical way things were done.
Just before the Market opened a rather unique band marched in. From a distance they sounded much like a high school marching band. I was very surprised when they came around the corner, these were some toe tapping, clog wearing, senior citizens who could blow their horns. They played through out the morning, keeping the feet of everyone moving.
While the market opens at Market begins at 10 am and runs for two entraining hours. See tips below to learn more about how and when to arrive.

While watching the cheese being carried and weighed, and listening to the great music would have been worth the trip its self. There are other things going on to keep you busy.
As you near the area you will see various stands. Of course some were selling cheese, but that wasn’t the only thing you could buy to eat. Raw herring was offered for those who felt adventurous enough to try this traditional Dutch snack. For the people who just didn’t care for the idea of eating raw fish, a both selling Dutch pancakes.
Any place you might find tourists, you will find souvenirs, no exception here. If the normal made in China nick-knacks don’t tickle your fancy, there was a gentleman demonstrating the carving skills and selling his wooden shoes.
People who like arts/crafts and local made one of a kinds, this place has some souvenirs that you won’t find in most places. Stained glass, drawings, paintings, sewn items, pottery, wire art, jewelry can all be found here.
Twelve noon the market closes for another week, and you are invited to visit the museum. Of course by now your feet are tired, and your raw hearing has worn off. Don’t worry, you don’t have to go far to eat. Numerous cafes line the streets. As for me, I tried a smoked salmon and egg salad sandwich and coffee… the sandwich was a big as the plate, and the cost was less than 10 euro including 2 coffees and tip.
