Looking down the Thames towards Blackfriars Bridge, the skyline appears misty but in the centre is the dome of Saint Paul's Cathedral. Walking along the banks of the Thames there are small areas of 'beach' and people can be found searching for things washed up by the river. In the past interesting artefacts have been retrieved from the river, and some are displayed in museums. |
| | Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace is the official home of the Queen. It attracts so many tourists because of its situation at the end of the Mall. The guards change regularly and make an interesting sight.. A statue of Queen Victoria stands in front of the Palace. There is the famous balcony overlooking the front, where royal bridal couples show themselves to well wishers, and when there are other special occasions too. In recent years parts of the palace have been open to tourists. |
The Mall The changing of the Guard and other military parades are sure to attract tourists. They march down Pall mall to Buckingham Palace rain or shine.
| | Charing Cross Charing Cross Station is unusual as from the distance [eg from the London Eye] it can clearly be seen to have been built in the shape of a railway engine. It was the site of one of the series of crosses set up in memory of Queen Eleanor by her grieving husband. From the Eye, as the photograph shoes, the tallest building to be seen is the Post Office Tower. |
Trafalgar Square One of the most famous and largest of London's squares. It is dominated by Nelson's column and the 4 Landseer lion statues. In the past it was popular to feed the pigeons, but now pigeons are considered a nuisance.
| | Tower Bridge Tower Bridge is the most distinctive of the bridges over the Thames. It can open to allow large ships to enter the Pool of London. It was completed in 1894, so is Victorian. In addition to the main part of the bridge there are high walkways with special windows through which visits can get great views of London. Nearby is tower pier where tourist launches begin trips. |
Art There are so many art galleries in London from The National Portrait Gallery, The Tate Modern, to name just two. Art flourishes with pavement artists,Dali on the South Bank, on the railings near Hyde Park; and everywhere there are statues of the famous. Exhibitions change regularly so there is always something new to see.
| | Parks and green places London has a number of well-know parks : Hyde Park, Regents Park; and gardens: Kensington Gardens as well as woods like those at Highgate, Hampstead Heath. Further afield are Richmond and Greenwich. Greenwich is home to the Maritime Museum, The Observatory and the Naval College. It is a vast green area and makes a lovely place to relax or wander around. From the top of the hill there is a view over the Thames to the Millenium Dome. |
