My brief time in my birth country--Paraguay

by am&pm - last update: Jul 17, 2007

My parents, me and four of my 8 siblings. I'm the one looking skeptically at my brother's pop gun. I was born in Asuncion, Paraguay in 1958. We left for England shortly after this picture was taken.
Family

Another family picture

My Oma on the left of the picture, Mom's mother, holding me. Very dear, very motherly. Paraguay was tough on the mothers because the environmental conditions created a lot of diseases and threats to health. A brother of mine, born a year before me, died during his birth in an event that, with better medical facilities, might have been avoidable.
around 1960

The big family

My family in Paraguay with my father's sister and brother and their children.

That's me (Angie) in my Dad's arms in the back row, center.

LANDSCAPE WITH LAPACHO TREE

Where is home?

Where willows gather
on the crumbling banks
and water rustles in the roots
and swallows skim;
the elm up-rushing
flings its falling green;
the still pine stands against the West.

Home is not only these.

The pink cloud of the flowering tree
across the camp
far, in the ridge of woods
struck by the dying sunlight
the lapacho,
and the river parrots
slowly flying
like herons.

Neither is strange,
not now,
when the heart has followed
the curve of the world
to find the same welcome.

(Poem written by a friend of my family--Jane Tyson Clement--when in Paraguay)
