Weather around the Maltese Islands !

Weather around the Maltese Islands !

Cirkewwa this February 2005
Weather around the Maltese Islands can be unpredictable - you never know how the day is going to turn out to be especially in Winter !

At times the wind blows so much that makes the sea very rough and its not very advisable to go near the sea, dive or go out on a boat. Many people died on account of the unpredicatable weather in Malta.
Also please note its not safe to swim if you see a red flag on the beach as some beaches have underwater currents that can make it very difficult for the swimmer to get back on shore so beware !

If the sea is rough do not go close to the shore as waves just surprise you all of a sudden like in this photo.

Summer Season

From June till September its mostly very sunny especially July and August is unbearable at times at times even 39 degrees C. Then come September we have our first showers but the sun still shines and the weather become fresher but at times still hot but not unbearable. The sea is cleaner and its nice to go to swim therefore I recommend September to come and visit the Malta Islands. October gets fresher but people stop swimming even though one can still swim if its sunny !

Due to all the bad weather we had this Winter- I heard some people say that this Summer is going to be a real hot one ! I hope not ! This is when I like travelling to a fresher country like England as July/August are too humid and sticky to stay in Malta besides the Summer months are long at times but they fly quickly !

Winter Season

The Winter season this year was quite a rough one for us locals as it was very cold. This year we had loads of rain showers, hail that did not melt so quickly but was not completely snow ! Unfortunitly it does not snow on our islands !

Our Winter season usually commences in November till March and even April at times - it depends. In April and May Spring comes along and this is another nice time to come to visit Malta however it will be too cold to swim this is why I always recommend September.

When the weather is bad - its really bad !

When the weather is bad in Malta - its really bad ! Not like in the UK for example its just gloomy, dull and just drizzles on days on end ! Here in Malta one day it can be thundering and lightening and can rain for about 4 continous days but then spend another 4 sunny days at least however the rainy days are terrible !

This February 2005 we had a couple of storms with thundering and lightening. As you can see in the photo the waves just cover the platform and the ladders which people usually use to climb into the sea.

Bad weather and what to do !

If you happened to be in Malta and there is a storm don;t go out of your apartment or hotel - best thing is to stay indoors ! Don't wander about close to the sea or decide to take a boat trip.

Avoid places like Msida, B'Kara Valley, Spinola or The Strand in Sliema. These places are the first to get flooded. When it rains in Malta it rains really badly at times thus clogging the roads in the areas I mentioned above thus causing cars to stop and even at times we had cars being moved as the water is very powerful. In some villages where the houses are on the narrow main roads - water even comes into their homes.

Sun peeping from behind the clouds

Sun peeping from behind the clouds !

When the sun comes out again it dries up everything however Malta is very humid and cold. Inside the homes in Malta its very cold as we do not have central heating unless one has an air-conditioner and loads of heaters however its very expensive to run. The houses and apartments are large compaired to for example the small cosy quaint houses in the Uk which get heated very quickly !

Moving clouds!

The weather in Malta is really unpredictable as you can see. Even though during the day it might seem sunny however at about 6ish it always gets very fresh so therefore always take a cardigan or a jersey especially at this time like April and May.

Fantastic photos. Those weather pictures are great though it makes me slightly worried about visiting Malta and Comino in Feb or March.
