Faces of the World

by MikeAtSea - last update: Mar 27, 2005

In Vietnam
This is one of my most favourite pictures of a Vietnamese woman that was sitting outside a temple in Hoi An. On several visits she was always sitting on the same spot selling small souvenirs with one of the warmest smiles that I have seen in Asia.
Taken during Ramadan in Muscat, Oman just after the first meal and drinks after the long day of fasting was enjoyed, the two young Omani men were in great spirit and offering their hospitality to us.
In Oman
In Cambodia
This picture I took in Angkor Wat, Cambodia. Whilst exploring one of the quieter temples of this massive temple complex I met this nun who was praying, she invited me to sit next to her, took my hand and prayed for me. Even though I did not understand what she was saying it was a very moving moment in this ancient site.
This young girl I met on a coconut plantation on the island of Ko Samui in Thailand. Her father who was one of the plantation managers taught the little girl how to work with coconuts which as it seems she took a likening to.
In Thailand
In China
In the mighty Peoples Republic of China I discovered the city of Zhangjagang along the Yangtze River. The town had been built in the last decade or so after a concept to create new and completely artificial towns on former rice fields. This picture I took on the local market where one could buy almost anything and the trader selling goods was friendly to explain to me some of the more ‘exotic’ Chinese goods on sale.
During a visit of Otaru in Northern Japan we decided to enjoy a sumptuous meal of Sushi and headed for a little restaurant. Not only was the Chef who prepared the food a master of his trade but he also had a great sense of humour, combined this with Japanese hospitality this was one of the best meals I had in Asia. Arigato!
In Japan
In Russia
One of the unusual scenes in a rather rundown Petropavlovsk in Eastern Siberia, when seeing this scene I could imagine this could happen almost anywhere in the world including in the poor and rather underdeveloped area of Kamchatka.
In Vigo, Northern Spain is the oyster region of the Iberian Peninsula a narrow lane in the upper part of town is where all the restaurants are lined up this old lady was opening oysters and selling them to all the passing pedestrians, including us – and they tasted delicious.
In Spain
